Watch sulfur content in animal feed from ethanol by-products

Recent expansion in the ethanol industry has resulted in larger amounts of corn milling by-products for animal feed. These distillers grains make good animal feed, but sulfur levels must be closely monitored.

Fortifying feed with biodiesel co-products

Biofuel research isn't just a matter of finding the right type of biomass--corn grain, soybean oil, animal fat, wood or other material--and converting it into fuel. Scientists must also find environmentally and economically sound uses for the by-products of biofuel production. Agricultural Research Service scientists Brian Kerr and William Dozier have done just that.

Maggots to help feed fish and reduce cow manure

University scientists here are working on a new maggot-based feed capable of fattening rainbows for the dinner table, while simultaneously helping slash growing mounds of manure and fish entrails.

GM corn 'improves animal feed, cuts pollution'

Chinese scientists have developed a genetically modified (GM) corn that could help improve the nutritional value of livestock feed and reduce pollution.

The research was announced by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) this week (10 September). The corn has now entered pre-production field trials.
