

Global soybean consumption is expected to continue to rise in the next decade, with a worldwide requirement of an extra 70-80 million tonnes mainly due to changing diets driving protein demand for animal feed in China. However, opportunities for pulse growers will exist closer to home, said PGRO chief executive, Salvador Potter.
He suggested that with soybean prices at between £250-£500 per tonne, compounders in Europe were being forced to look for more local sources of protein in order to fulfil demand.

The price of fishmeal, the key feedstuff for salmon and shrimp aquaculture, has surged to an all-time high after an earthquake wiped out processing plants in Chile, the world's second- biggest exporter of the commodity, this year.
The blow comes as the industry battles a supply squeeze caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is hitting fish catches in Peru, the world's biggest fishmeal exporter.

Organically fed chickens develop a different process of gene expression in their small intestines than that of chickens which get conventional feed. The organic chickens have higher expressed genes involved in the creation of cholesterol, but do not have raised cholesterol levels in their blood. This surprising conclusion was drawn by Wageningen animal researchers (The Netherlands) last month in the British Journal of Nutrition.
