GlobalGAP develops new 'add-on' feed standard

GlobalGAP, a non-governmental organization that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products, has developed a voluntary add-on standard to its Compound Feed Manufacturing (CFM) standard and other benchmark standards.

The organisation said, "Moving towards a sustainable world, GLOBALG.A.P. is always seeking to lead the market and support trends setting good practices at farm level. Animals raised for human consumption are one part of this – not just the animals themselves, but also the appropriate and sustainable sourcing of raw ingredients for their feed."

Increasing demand from consumers about this issue led GLOBALG.A.P. to develop a voluntary Add-on Standard to the GLOBALG.A.P. Compound Feed Manufacturing (CFM) Standard and other benchmarked standards. The Responsible Operations Standard (ROS) for Compound Feed Manufacturers works to improve the sustainability of compound feed production.

The first draft version of this ROS for CFM is now open for public consultation until 15 February 2015. GlobalGAP invites the public to participate in this process and to send their feedback to standard@globalgap.org.

The Add-on is intended to be implemented on a voluntary manner. Those feed mills that are currently certified and supplying compound feed to livestock and aquaculture GLOBALG.A.P. certified farms, will have the option to upgrade on responsible practices through compliance with this ROS Add-on, which will be reflected on the certification at farm level.

The document is available here.
