Vietnam and Cambodia increase agricultural ties

Hanoi, Vietnam -- Viet Nam and Cambodia will jointly implement some 20 projects in agricultural science and technology, quarantine, forestry and seafood with a VND365 billion (US$17 million) budget between now and 2020.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it would sign a government-level agreement with the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Seafood to grow 300,000ha of rubber and industrial trees in Cambodia.

The two sides would strengthen co-operation in plant protection and veterinary projects as well as discuss measures to prevent the spread of disease across borders. They planned to sign co-operative agreements on the exchange of information and data on seafood, aquaculture development and research activities.

Viet Nam and Cambodia would emphasise the importance of sustainable forest management, controlling the trade of timber, forest products and wild animals, as well as scientific and technological co-operation in forest development.

The countries would boost investment and trade activities in seafood processing and cattle-feed production. In addition, Viet Nam would also assist Cambodia in a VND50 billion aquatic breeding development project and a VND200 billion project to build a seafood research institute in Kampot Province.

The two sides would also co-operate in developing safe vegetable production in border provinces.
