Thai Feed Mill Association drafts road map for sustainable fisheries

The Thai Feed Mill Association drafted a road map for sustainable fisheries development to ensure the industry achieves sustainability throughout the supply chain, reported The Nation.

The plan will concentrate on a framework, activities and enforcement among stakeholders in the fisheries chain. Under the plan, Thailand's fishery industry will achieve production sustainability within five years.

Pornsil Patchrintanakul, president of the association, said that the road map would be completed by July and implemented in August.

The political "chaos" has prompted companies to adjust their strategies and put more effort on development to ensure that their businesses run smoothly. The fisheries industry is one of the businesses that need to move forward in accordance with international standards to achieve sustainable growth, Pornsil said.

Non-governmental organisations including the World Wildlife Fund and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership have helped chart the plan to meet international standards. The two organisations will work in line with the Fishery Improvement Project to scope a framework and practices by this month.

The scoping framework will have to undergo a pre-assessment by third parties, including government agencies, the private sector and NGOs. This process will be finalised by April. After this step, the draft road map will be developed for the country's action plan.
