Mill upgrade to serve Welsh egg producers

Egg producers in south Wales will be able to have layer rations mixed and milled to their own specific needs thanks to a £250,000 upgrade of a local feed mill.

The Wynnstay mill at Carmarthen, founded in 1981 to supply the local dairy industry, has added poultry feed to its list of animal feed products due to an upgrade which allows for the production of a coarse ration for layers.

"The new equipment was commissioned in mid-September and we are already supplying a selection of standard and bespoke feeds to a number of new egg producing customers," says mill operations manager Wynne Jones.

"We are working to increase feed sales throughout the Welsh border counties and along the M4 corridor, and to supply a number of new egg laying enterprises that are starting up within our trading area following input from Wynnstay's poultry sales team."

Wynnstay is the leading supplier of animal feed for poultry and other livestock across mid, south and west Wales.

Wales this year became the largest producer of free-range eggs in Europe, with production trebling since 2006, as livestock farmers look to diversify and new entrants move into production due to favourable grants from the Welsh Assembly and the impending 2012 EU cage ban.
