Two new cattle feed processing plants announced in Punjab

On Tuesday, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal announced plans for the setup of two cattle feed processing units costing Rs. 5 crore each at Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur. The feed plants will be operated by Markfed and Milkfed.

The cattle feed mills are part of an effort to provide assured marketing support to maize farmers under Punjab's crop diversification plan.

Badal said that the state government efforts to boost agriculture diversification could only fructify with the assured marketing mechanism in place to benefit the farmers and the setting these two cattle feed plants was a positive step in this direction.

The Chief Minister also directed the FCD to ensure the marketing of maize through the leading cattle and feed manufacturing companies directly from the farmers.

Apart from this, he also asked the Agriculture Department to find ways and means for value addition of maize in the PPP mode to ensure better marketing facilities to the maize growers.

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Commissioner apprised the Chief Minister that he had already taken up this issue with the various manufacturers of cattle and feed based at Khanna.

Milkfed also known as the Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited, and was established in 1973. The company is tasked with the production, procurement and processing of milk for the economic development of milk producers by providing remunerative milk market to them at their door step. Along with providing quality milk and milk products to consumers at reasonable rates.

Markfed also known as the Punjab State Co-op Supply & Marketing Federation Ltd. was established in 1954. Markfed is Asia's largest marketing cooperative, dealing in canned and bottled products, rice, oils, agrochemicals, and animal care products.
