Perdue completes dismantling of Cofield, N.C. feed mill after fatal explosion

Perdue Farms has finished dismantling the feed mill at its Cofield, North Carolina facility following the Feb. 21 incident that killed one person. Demolition work began April 20; in an April 15 release the company said the process could take up to 12 weeks. The company credited emergency responders, including North Carolina Task Force 10, for their role after the explosion.

Perdue said removing the structure is expected to eliminate the source of intermittent fires that had been burning beneath debris since the collapse. The dismantling removes the feed mill from operation at the Cofield site.

Perdue’s statements did not include details on equipment recovery, remaining or replacement capacity, production volumes, timeline for returning feed production at the site, or estimated costs. For feed mill operators and buyers monitoring regional capacity, the company's announcement confirms the mill will not operate in its current form but offers no schedule or financials for rebuilding or reallocation of production.
