R$ 10 million allocated for shrimp farming in Piauí

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Marcelo Crivelli, met earlier this week with Governor of Piauí, Wilson Nunes Martins, to declare the allocation of R$ 10 million (USD$5 million) to be invested in shrimp farming projects in the state.

The project will be developed with small families in the municipality of Luis Correia.

According to the minister, the project will include the installation of modular cultivation and shrimp production, feed mills, training for farmers, refrigeration units, and other equipment.

Crivelli said "We will assist the small producer from the production, processing and marketing of the product, enabling consolidation of this productive arrangement in Piauí."

Governor of Piauí, Wilson Martins stated the program aimed to strengthen the fish farming which has been implemented in ten dams in the State. Altogether a total amount of R$ 2.8 million has been invested by the state, towards the purchase of cages, fish food, floats, scales, motor boats, and other tools that foster the development of fish farming.

Martins said "The program Support for Aquaculture and Fisheries of Piauí aims to reach all dams and lakes in the state, generating employment and income for the families living near dams in Piaui." He continued by saying that so far six counties were covered by the program.

Marcelo Crivelli, will visit the state of Piauí in June to sign the work order for the implementation of the shrimp programme. At that time equipment will also be delivered, designed to strengthen the aquaculture program that is
developed by the State Government.

Marcelo Crivelli added, "I really liked the initiative of Governor Wilson Martins to develop a program for fish farming in the state, it is a productive arrangement that requires less investment and provides a quick return, as well as shrimp farming."

The investment in Piauí comes as the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) looks to strengthen the aquaculture industry in Brazil.
