Nebraska cattle on feed up 2 percent in March

Cattle on feed numbers in Nebraska feedlots of 1,000 or more head were up 2 percent in March, according to the Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service.

The March 1 inventory was 2.51 million head of cattle. That was also up 8 percent from March 1, 2005, and the highest March 1 inventory since the series begain in 1994.

According to the report, placements in feedlots during February totaled 360,000 head, up 9 percent from 2006 and 14 percent above 2005.

Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 380,000 head, up 6 percent from last year and 15 percent above February two years ago.



Other disappearance during February totaled 10,000 head, compared with 10,000 head during February 2006 and 15,000 head February 2005.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States at feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on March 1. The inventory was 4 percent below March 1, 2006, but 4 percent above March 1, 2005.

Placements in feedlots during February totaled 1.66 million, 4 percent above 2006 and 9 percent above 2005. Net placements were 1.58 million.

During February, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 325,000, 600-699 pounds were 334,000, 700-799 pounds were 505,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 495,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.71 million, 7 percent above 2006 and 5 percent above 2005.

Other disappearance totaled 75,000 during February, 3 percent above 2006 but 3 percent below 2005.
