6,440 tonnes weekly of feed inputs blocked from reaching Cochabamba mills

Blockades in Cochabamba prevented the weekly entry of about 6,440 tonnes of inputs destined for feed production, a volume normally moved in roughly 230 trucks. The disruptions, which have stretched beyond 50 days, have stopped deliveries to feed mills and raw material suppliers across the region.

Producers warn the shortages put more than 11 million birds at risk and have already halted the repopulation of 5.6 million birds, interrupting production cycles that require strict timing. The sector estimates 5.3 million broiler-equivalent birds (about 14,310 tonnes of chicken) represent Bs 258 mil millones in investment, while 5.8 million layers correspond to Bs 325 millones; commercial egg output affected is cited at 4 billion eggs with a Bs 2 mil millones impact. Attempts to use air transport proved economically unsustainable, with costs reported up to Bs 15.60 per kilogram. The industry projects production losses could reach 80% by late June if blockades persist, and anticipates sharp consumer price rises — for example, chicken at retail estimated to climb from Bs 25 to Bs 45 per kilo and a 30-egg carton from Bs 27 to Bs 40.
