India's largest cattle feed plant opens

Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy will inaugurate its new fully automated Sagardan factory at Jagudan on Sunday. The cattle feed plant that will be inaugurated by chief minister Narendra Modi will be largest in the country with a capacity of 10 lakh kilogram per day.

This cattle feed plant is in addition to Dudhsagar Dairy's existing plants at Boriyavi and Ukkal with 900 metric tonne per day capacity.

The new automated factory has come up on the land where erstwhile Gujarat Co-Operative Oil Seeds Growers Federation Limited once had an oil mill, which the dairy took over from National Dairy Development Board. It was in 2009 that Mehsana District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (MDCMPUL) popularly known as Dudhsagar Dairy had laid foundation for this cattle feed manufacturing plant.

"We had started the project for setting up this factory to strengthen our existing cattle feed and animal husbandry services provided to farmers who are members of our union. Now, this cattle feed plant will help us start supply of cattle feed to milk societies in states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana where farmers are exploited as they presently do not have access to the organized sector," Dudhsagar Dairy's chairman Vipul Chaudhary, who also heads Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), told TOI on Friday.

From nearly 3,500 mandalis that the north Gujarat based district dairy union have set up in Rajasthan, UP and Haryana, the dairy presently collects six lakh litres per day (LLPD) milk.

The milk is processed at its satellite dairy plant in Manesar from where it is packaged and sold under brand name Amul in Delhi market.
