Kansas State University’s Department of Grain Science and Industry has named Chris Miller as its new Buhler Instructor of Milling Science & Management after completing a national search.

Miller, who initially joined the K-State faculty on an interim basis in January 2009, teaches milling science and management courses as well as Buhler short courses hosted by K-State’s International Grains Program (IGP).

Buhler Inc., based in the Minneapolis, Minn. area is a technology company involved in food processing, chemical process engineering, and die casting. It is the largest supplier of flour milling equipment in the world. Its parent company is based in Uzwil, Switzerland.

Miller earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at K-State. He previously worked for The Quaker Oats Company as an operations resource/process improvement engineer and as a supervisor in the company’s oat milling operations.

“I’m delighted to have Chris Miller join our faculty as he has already been doing a great job teaching courses,” said Dirk Maier, Grain Science Department Head. “He brings practical industry experience into the classroom and is passionate about teaching undergraduate students and industry professionals. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Professor Miller also will serve as an advisor to our undergraduate students.”

Maier said that Miller’s appointment was unique, in that outside funding supports the faculty position.

“I want to acknowledge the significant and ongoing financial support of Buhler Inc. that makes funding of this instructor position in our department possible,” Maier said. “It is a long-term investment into the education and training of our students who are the future professionals of the global milling and food processing industry.”
