Kebbi government subsidises animal feed

Nigeria - The government in Kebbi (north-western Nigeria) has purchased animal feeds worth 45NGN million (approximately $300,000 USD) for distribution to pastoralists at subsidised prices. Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Nomadic Fulani, Alhaji Nasiru Masama disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

Masama said the program was part of efforts to enhance animal protein and extend democratic dividends to pastoralists.

He said the animal feed which included cattle salt, bags of dust and seeds were stored in zonal depots.

According to him, the depots are located in Birnin Kebbi, Yauri, Zuru and Argungu local government areas and the sale of the items will commence in February.

Meanwhile, the governor’s aide also said that 12 earth dams were constructed in 2009 with a view to providing succour to the postoralists and their livestock.

He appealed to them to abide by the policy on farms and range demarcation for grazing, to avoid unnecessary clash with farmers.
"Government has painstakingly provided enough demarcation on farm and grazing to avoid clashes", he said.

Gov Saidu Dakingari had proposed that N220 million be allocated to the livestock and veterinary sector in the 2010 budget yet to be approved by the state Assembly.(NAN)
