Kendari gov. to invest in feed mill to help local farmers

The government of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, will build an animal feed factory to support the poultry farms in the area.

"Currently, we are building a medium-scale animal feed factory. Our hope is that it will be operational in 2016," said the Head of the Department of Agriculture, Zainal Arifin Kendari, in Kendari on Saturday.

He said that construction of the feed plant was to answer to the constraints of farmers in the area, linked to the price of animal feed that was relatively expensive due to be needing to be brought in from outside the area.

"Due to the expensive feed prices, farmers can not survive to develop the business and thus the demand for eggs and chicken meat needed to be supplied from outside Kendari," he said.

According to him, the construction of animal feed factory in the city of Kendari will be supported with raw feed materials, such as the remains of fish from fishing companies that exist in ocean fishing port (PPS) Kendari.

"If the feed mill is in operation, we can direct the farmers to develop the livestock business, be it cattle, broilers or laying hens," he said.
