December 2005 - Cargill Animal Nutrition (CAN) has opened a new 140,000-ton capacity feed manufacturing facility in Lecompte, La. The new mill will produce feed for the pet food, aquaculture, equine, beef, poultry, dairy, and wild game industries.

According to the company, construction of the mill took nine months, and was overseen by Minnesota-based I.E. Ibberson, building contractor. The old mill in the adjacent lot was shut down during the heart of construction and ultimately torn down while the new facility was built. Feed was brought in from CAN mills in four different states to meet the needs of customers.

"Our new feed mill significantly speeds unload times for our suppliers and turn-around times for our customers," said CAN Southeast General Manager Chuck Nault.

The facility has 53,000 square feet of warehouse space. Its tower is 231 feet tall, with 65 bins for grain, bulk ingredients, and finished feed. There are also six large storage bins outside of the tower. Two separate extruders allow the mill to produce pet food and specialty aqua feeds at the same time. The mill is capable of producing both bag and bulk textured feeds as well as pellets and crumbles of various sizes.

The Lecompte plant has a staff of 38 production, sales, and administrative personnel. For more information on the Lecompte feed mill, call 800/960-9361
