Azolla weed trialled as new feed source

With grain prices at record highs this season, a new type of feed for livestock may have been discovered in Victoria's Goulburn Valley.

The azolla weed, which grows in waterways, is being trialled as a viable food source for livestock.

The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority's Geoff Earl says tests still need to be completed but it looks promising.

"We're now getting some tests to see if we can use it as a feed stock," he said.

"We know its been used quite extensively in Asia for pigs, duck and fish to feed them.

"Because it's got quite a high protein content.

"But we've got to make sure the varieties that are growing in Broken Creek."
