All sizes and types of beef operations should consider the use of byproducts, says Matt Poore, North Carolina State University (NCSU) animal scientist. "It is a niche cattle have; they can make use of those feeds."

Poore starts his list of favorites with whole cottonseed. "If it is locally available and you don't use it, you should take a look at it. Even a small producer can get a pickup truckload of it. It works extremely well as a cow supplement." The nutrition- and fiber-packed byproduct averages 88% dry matter, 22% protein and 96% total digestible nutrients (TDN).
